Parts of Speech

Traditional grammar authors categorize words into eight classes called the eight parts of speech. Recognizing which category a word belongs can help you in analyzing, understanding and constructing good sentences. Note that a word can be more than one part of speech. How the word functions in a particular sentence determines what part of speech it is.

2. Pronoun
3. Verb
4. Adjective
5. Adverb
6. Preposition
7. Conjunction
8. Interjection

Other authors come up with 9 to 10 parts of speech, categorizing the determiners (articles) and the two verb forms (auxiliary and lexical) separately.
